Rhinoplasty (Nose Reshaping)

Provided by Wockhardt Hospital

It is recommended that before undergoing Rhinoplasty, patients wait until they are at least 14 or 15, and possibly older for boys. The reason being that nose may not be fully developed at a younger age. Your plastic surgeon will ascertain that you would want to change your appearance based on your own feeling, rather than your parents or friends. With the only condition of your good health, there is no upper age limit for having your nose reshaped. Often along with nose reshaping being performed, certain breathing problems related to internal nasal structures can be amended. Your plastic surgeon can guide you to determine whether the aforesaid structures should be modified along with nose reshaping.

The factors to determine whether you are a good candidate for Rhinoplasty are:

  • In comparison to your face your nose appears too large
  • A bump on the nasal bridge is visible when viewed in profile
  • When viewed from the front your nose appears too wide
  • Drooped or plunged the nasal tip
  • Thickened or enlarged nose tip
  • Excessively flared nostrils
  • Off-center or crooked nose
  • Asymmetrical nose due to previous injury

You need to have a clear idea about the desired look of your nose. Simultaneously you also need to be aware of limitations to the procedure.

Patients having sufficient physical and emotional maturity and who undergo rhinoplasty because they want to enhance their self-image are usually very satisfied with their decision.

IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM

Problems related to breathing and a detailed medical history will be assessed. The next step is identifying the exact nature of the problem as you see it. It will then be possible to give a realistic solution.

DISCUSSING OUTCOME OF RHINO-PLASTY

Considering the individual factors, not everyone will achieve the same results from Rhinoplasty. It is vital to discuss the best possible outcomes for you.

PLACING THE RHINOPLASTY INCISIONS

The goals established by you and your plastic surgeon will primarily determine the surgical techniques employed.

Mostly all of the incisions will be placed inside your nose, where they will not be visible and affect your appearance. In case the base of the nose is narrowed or the nostrils reduced, small wedges of skin at the base of the nostrils will be removed. The natural crease where the nostril joins the cheek hides the incisions made. Sometimes a very short incision is made across columella, the vertical strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. This technique is called an ”open rhinoplasty.”

Be rest assured that any incisions used to reshape your nose, will ultimately be very inconspicuous.

Alterations might be required to:

  • increase or decrease the nasal bridge
  • reduce the size or width of the nose
  • narrow the nostrils
  • change the angle between the nose and upper lip
  • reshape the tip.
RISKS

Fortunately for patients, significant complications from rhinoplasty are infrequent. Year after year multitudes of people, who have their noses reshaped, experience no major problems and are pleased with the results. However one should be aware of both the benefits and risks when considering surgery.

A detailed information booklet will be provided with instructions and precautions for the immediate and early postoperative period. This will also discuss the sequelae of Rhinoplasty.

HOW DOES A RHINOPLASTY ACTUALLY WORK ?

Work is done on the cartilage and bone that form the framework of your nose through the small incisions explained previously. There is a possibility that position of certain bones may need to be altered slightly in order to make your nose look narrower and straighter. In case your nose needs to be built up in some areas, nasal cartilage or perhaps bone or cartilage from another site can be used. The recuperation is through soft tissues redraping themselves over this new ”scaffolding.”

ANAESTHESIA

Local or general anesthesia is used during the surgery depending on the extent of the procedure. However, general anaesthesia or deep sedation is preferred. In any case, there will be no pain felt during the operation.

RECOVERY
Discomfort can be controlled by medication. For holding the tissues in place until they have stabilized, a splint may have been placed on the bridge of your nose depending on the surgical technique used. The splint will have dual function - protect your nose while you sleep and shield it from accidental bumps. Quite often, you may also have a small triangular bandage beneath the tip of your nose. If work has been done to improve your breathing, in particular, packing or soft internal splints are sometimes used inside the nostrils.

RESULTS

Rhinoplasty Nose Reshaping Before and After image Rhinoplasty aims at a nose that not only looks natural but blends harmoniously with your other facial features as well. Because of the gradual healing process you should expect to wait up to one year to see the final results of your Rhinoplasty. A touchup might be desired occasionally to further improve the results. In this case, the required additional procedure is usually less extensive than the original operation.

It is important to regularly follow-up with your plastic surgeon.
