What is carotid angiography?

Carotid angiography is a procedure to examine the patient's carotid artery which is an artery in the neck that supplies oxygen-rich blood to the brain.

It is an imaging procedure, which involves inserting a catheter into a blood vessel in the arm or leg and guiding it to the carotid arteries with the aid of a special X-ray machine. Contrast dye is injected through the catheter so that X-ray movies of your carotid arteries (the arteries that supply your brain with oxygen-rich blood) can be taken. The X-Rays help in identifying any problems.

A carotid artery angiography is performed to identify any problems in the carotid artery of the heart. It may be performed to look for:
