The genioplasty operation is commonly referred to as chin augmentation.

Genioplasty/Mentoplasty is a type of cosmetic surgery that is used to improve the appearance of a person's chin. This can take the form of chin height reduction or chin rounding by osteotomy, or chin augmentation using implants.

It involves the movement of the chin, which may be moved forward, backward or upward to shorten it, or downward to lengthen it. It may also be moved to the facial centre line in cases of facial asymmetry. The choice depends on how it might affect your ability to let your lips relax together and on how it affects your facial appearance. Because it involves the bottom portion of the lower jaw, this procedure may also be referred to as an interior border osteotomy.

A particular process, known as a sliding genioplasty, involves removing a horseshoe-shaped piece of the chin bone and sliding it either backwards or forwards, finally fixing it in place using titanium screws. This type of surgery is usually performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
