INDIAN GOVERNMENT PROMOTES MEDICAL TOURISM

Ambika Soni, Union Tourism Minister, India, has announced a $6.5 billion investment for medical tourism in India. This amount will be used for setting up affordable hospitals and budget hotels for patients’ relatives in the country, she added.

Due to the lack of insurance coverage in the US, and the long waiting times in the UK and Canada, patients from these countries are increasingly findging India as a great option as it fits the bill for its value for money expertise.

According to Dr. Anupam Sibal, group medical director, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, the tie-up with the 'Incredible India' campaign and start of medical visas will go a long way in promoting India as the best healthcare destination. 'Incredible India' is an initiative launched by the Ministry of Tourism, India to promote tourism in the country.

"Health tourism and medical tourism is perceived to be one of the fastest growing segments in marketing 'Destination Incredible India' today. While this area has so far been relatively unexplored, we now find that not only the ministry of tourism but also various state tourism boards are promoting health and medical tourism as a segment with tremendous potential for future growth," says K. B. Kachru, country head, Carlson Group.
