RESUME OF SURGICAL EXPERIENCE My formal training in Cardiothoracic surgery as a post doctoral fellow was at Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences, a premier tertiary referral center, conducting about 1800 adult and pediatric surgeries every year. The three years of training provided skills in decision making in adult and pediatric cardiac patients, managing the surgical intensive care unit, and assisting and independently performing more than 500 cases of both adult and pediatric cardiac surgeries, including surgery for complex congenital heart disease, thoracic and vascular conditions. Following my formal training, a brief stint at Manipal Hospital further enhanced my operative skill and experience. Subsequent to this I had the opportunity to work with Dr Tirone E David at the Toronto General Hospital, Toronto, Canada. The thirteen months with the team at TGH exposed me to complex valve repairs, root replacements including the David procedure, aortic surgery and LVAD’s including the Heart Mate II (the first to be implanted in Canada). Heart and heart – lung transplant exposure was significant and was part of routine training. It also provided significant exposure to postoperative intensive care management of complex cardiac patients and transplants. Following this I had the opportunity to work at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston. With already sufficient surgical training from Toronto, the year at BWH provided a platform to refine techniques, learn newer approaches, perfect minimally invasive techniques and the opportunity to work with Dr Lawrence H Cohn. The year at BWH provided enormous insight in managing complex reoperations, dealing with the very old and operating on patients with multisystem disorders, in addition to active involvement in the heart transplant program. This year of training provides the confidence and desire to bring the same level of excellence in care back home.
