From 1978 to 1981 he was resident in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the University of New Jersey, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey, where he was chief resident in his last year. In 1981 and 1982 he was associate professor of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of New Jersey School Of Medicine in Newark, as well as working as cardiovascular surgeon associate at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston with Dr. Denton Cooley.

Since 1983, Dr. Sepúlveda has been practicing General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery in Monterrey, Mexico. Additionally, he is professor of surgery at all three schools of medicine in the city of Monterrey, Mexico. He is a licensed physician in the United States through his reciprocity licenses in the state of Texas, Illinois and New Jersey, and Member of multiple medical and surgical societies. Dr. Sepúlveda is Board Certified in General, Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery from Mexico National Specialty Boards.
