APPOINTMENTS
Consultant Otolaryngologist & Hon. Senior Lecturer April 2002 to Sept 2005 Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Glasgow Royal Infirmary University Hospital Alexandra Parade Glasgow G31 2ER (UK)
Higher Surgical Training in Otolaryngology October 1995 to April 2002
I have completed the 6 year Higher Surgical Training Programme in Otolaryngology under the West of Scotland Postgraduate Committee. This involves rotating through various hospitals in the region. This included the following fellowships:
Neuro-otology & skull base surgery at the Institute of Neurological Sciences, Glasgow Cochlear Implantation at the Scottish National Centre for Cochlear Implants, Crosshouse Hospital , Kilmarnock Paediatric ENT at Royal Hospital for sick children, Yorkhill, Glasgow.
Basic Surgical Training January 1992 to October 1995
My basic surgical training was composed of 2 years of Otorhinolaryngology and 20 months of General
Surgical training. CLINICAL EXPERIENCE AND SPECIAL SKILLS
I am extremely competent in the management of all common conditions of the ear, nose and throat that affect both children and adults.
I have extensive surgical experience for conditions that affect the ear and hearing(tympanoplasty, stapedotomy, mastoidectomy), nose and sinuses (septoplasty, endoscopic sinus surgery), cosmetic nasal surgery (rhinoplasty), head and neck (parotid and thyroid gland surgery).
My experience at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children has empowered me to provide speciality services in all areas of paediatric ENT.
I am very competent in minimal access techniques such as upper aero-digestive endoscopy, endoscopic nasal and sinus surgery and endoscopic surgery of the skull base.
I have also developed super-speciality skills in Neuro-otology : cochlear implantation, bone anchored hearing device implantation, skull base surgery (eg. for vestibular schwannomas) and the management of adult and paediatric deafness and dizziness (labyrinthectomy, endolymphatic sac decompression).
Otology / Neurotology / Skull base surgery
This is a particular interest of mine and I have had wide exposure to otologic conditions and their treatment, particularly chronic otitis media, otosclerosis, deafness, tinnitus and dizziness. I perform all types of middle ear and mastoid procedures both in adults and children, and am competent in the use of the Argon laser in stapedotomies and chronic middle ear surgery. I am competent in the clinical assessment and management of the dizzy patient and in tinnitus rehabilitation.
I maintain a regular and prospective audit of all otologic operations performed since the commencement of my training. I have thus accumulated personal audit data of all tympanoplasties, stapedectomies and mastoidectomies performed over the last 15 years.
I was attached to the neuro-otology and skull base team at the Institute of Neurological Sciences, Glasgow and have experience in a variety of neuro-otological and skull base procedures. I am competent in the medical and surgical management of dizziness and facial paralysis. I am experienced in the surgical management of acoustic nerve tumours and other lesions of the lateral skull base. I am competent in endoscopic skull base surgery for lesions of the anterior and lateral skull base, CSF leaks etc.
I obtained my surgical experience in cochlear implants at the Scottish National Centre for Cochlear Implants (Crosshouse hospital). I was also actively involved in the assessment of adults and children towards suitability for cochlear implantation, as well as post operative sessions with the scientists when patients are reviewed for speech processor programming (Mapping) and rehabilitation. The centre implants 40 patients ( 20 adults and 20 children) each year and has implanted over 500 patients so far, of which I have personally implanted over 80 patients till date.
I am also competent in the audiological assessment, surgical technique and post-operative care of adult and paediatric patients requiring bone anchored hearing aids (BAHA) and middle ear hearing implant (vibrant soundbridge).
The Cochlear & Hearing Implant Programme at Apollo Hospital, Delhi The above experience has empowered me to set up the cochlear and hearing implant programme (for children and adults) at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital. I am the team leader for the implant programme and I have already performed over 100 cochlear implant procedures and BAHA surgery in the last 18 months..
Paediatric Otolaryngology
My attachment to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Glasgow has increased my exposure to childrens’ ENT disorders. I am familiar with the management of the child with stridor (noisy and difficult breathing) and conditions that affect the paediatric airway. I perform larygo-bronchoscopies in children of all ages both in elective and emergency situations and use the carbon dioxide laser where applicable. I am competent in the complete range of procedures that may be necessary in the surgical management of a child with airway problems; such as paediatric tracheostomies, cricoid splits and laryngotracheal reconstructions with costal cartilage grafts. I am in the process of setting up the neonatal hearing screening facility at Apollo Hospital which is paramount for the early detection of hearing impairment in babies.
