Doctor Carlos Rettally VargasGastroenterology
Education and Specialty Doctor Rettally received his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad de Panama in 1993. In 1999 completed an Internal Medicine residency at the Louis A. Weiss Memorial Hospital / University of Chicago en Chicago, Ilinois. Then in 2003, he finished his fellowship in Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy at the Univeristy of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, in San Antonio, Texas.
Major Positions heldDoctor Rettally served as Chief of Medical Interns during his internship in Changuinola, Bocas del Toro in 1995. He was appointed Chief Resident at the Louis A. Weiss Memorial Hospital / University of Chicago in 1999. Since 2004, he dictates lectures for medical students from the Universidad de Panama and Universidad Latina medical schools.
MeetingsDoctor Rettally has attended important meetings in the field of Gastroenterology including: The Digestive Disease Week organized by the American Gastroenterology Association (Atlanta 2001, Orlando 2003, Chicago 2005), the annual meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology (Las Vegas 2001), the Centroamerican Association of Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy meeting (Honduras 2004, El Salvador 2006), the Mexican Digestive Disease Week (Mexico 2006) and the Panamanian Association of Gastroenterology meetings in Panama. Doctor Rettally attended the Hands on Course of Advanced Endoscopy, organized by the American Socierty of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in Oak Brook, Illinois in 2006.

PublicationsDoctor Rettally has published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, Transplantation Proceedings and Critical Reviews in Clinical and Laboratory Sciences.
ResearchDoctor Rettally has received funding as primary investigator to study the use of colonoscopy in family members of patients with colon cancer in Panama; has participated in research protocols involving patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome and has ongoing studies titled: “Efficacy of two protocols for eradication of Helicobacter pylori” and “Presence of alarm symptoms in dyspeptic patients referred to a gastroenterology specialist”
Special InterestsDoctor Rettally is interested in promoting colonoscopy for the early detection and prevention of colorectal cancer and in the development of a clinic in Hospital Punta Pacifica specialized in a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of obesity
