LITHOTRIPSY OR STONE REMOVAL

Lithotripsy is the term generally used to refer to Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) or Shock Wave Lithotripsy. It is a non-invasive medical procedure that uses shock waves to break up stones that form in the kidney, bladder, ureters, or gallbladder.

Your surgeon will start the procedure by using X-ray or ultrasound images to see where the stones are. High-energy shock waves, also called sound waves, will be passed through your body to the area on the kidney stones which will break the stones into tiny pieces. These small pieces will eventually pass out of your body during urination. This procedure takes from 45 minutes to 1 hour and is generally done on an outpatient basis.

As ESWL requires no cutting, you have less pain and a quicker recovery.

But in certain conditions the use of ESWL may be prohibited, such as when the stones to be treated are very large or if you cannot have ESWL for some reason. Under those circumstances the stones are treated using other techniques like laser lithotripsy or percutaneous lithotripsy or endoscopic lithotripsy.
