TRAVEL INSURANCE TIPS

Read the following insurance tips if you are traveling abroad and are thinking of buying medical travel insurance for yourself and/or your family:

  • Check with your current medical insurer if your existing policy will cover you when you are abroad.

  • If your regular insurance plan does not provide out of country coverage, you may want to consider purchasing a travel insurance policy.

  • Will the policy cover hospitalizations as well as out-patient services?

  • What are the conditions and limitations, if any?

  • Can it be used for emergencies and non-emergencies alike? If not, what are the clauses and fine prints?

  • Will the deductibles / co-payments stay the same or be different for overseas treatment / care?

  • Check with your insurer if they will pay directly to the hospital for any medical services received.

  • Does your plan include "air ambulance" coverage?

  • When purchasing air tickets using a credit card, ask that credit card company if they will provide you free travel insurance. Also check the coverage details - conditions of validity (emergencies, non-emergencies, etc.), amount covered and so on.

  • Last but not the least, keep handy your insurance record (insurance card), passport, a major credit card, emergency contact information as well as the information of your family doctor.
