Common yoga asanas or postures of hatha yoga

Below are a few common yoga asanas (yoga postures) taught in hatha yoga classes:

Yoga chakras Padmasana (lotus pose): This is a cross-legged sitting posture and the meditating position of Buddha. It consists of sitting with your spine straight, the feet settled over the thigh of the opposite leg, the arms stretched out and the wrist resting on the knees. The hands should be stretched out with the tips of the thumb and index finger touching each other.

Uttanasana (forward bend): The posture consists of standing with feet together, then hinging forward from the hips, letting the head hang, with palms placed flat on the floor near the feet.

Sirsasana (head stand): The body is completely inverted, and held upright supported by the forearms, while the crown of the head rests lightly on the floor.

Paschimottanasana (intense stretch of the west): This posture consists of sitting on the floor with legs flat on the floor, straight ahead, then lifting the spine long, hinging from the hips instead of the waist, leaning forward without bending the knees. The focus must be on bringing the chest forward, not on bringing the head to the floor.

Dhanurasana (bow pose): This posture is executed by lying on the belly, then grabbing the feet and lifting the legs into the shape of a bow.

Halasana (plow pose): Lying on the floor lift your legs and then place them behind the head.

There are hundreds of different postures and many hundreds more variations of these postures in combination with different breathing techniques. Therefore, yoga is best learnt under the guidance of a registered yoga instructor so you may be able to decide the best fit for your body and the goals you wish to achieve.
