In June 1985, National Medical Enterprises Incorporated (NME), the largest healthcare company in the United States of America (USA) at that time, bought Mount Elizabeth Hospital. It drew upon the management expertise from USA and strived to provide the best tertiary hospital services in Singapore and the region. NME also purchased East Shore Hospital in November 1989. Mount Elizabeth Hospital is recognised throughout the region for its specialty services and excellent physicians. It offers cardiology, neurosciences, and many other tertiary services. It has the first private cancer centre in the region and was the first private hospital in Singapore to offer cardiac catheterisation, cardiac and neurosurgery and other advanced medical procedures. To cope with the increasing demand for medical suites as more specialists in the government hospitals leave to join Mount Elizabeth Hospital and Medical Centre, a new wing was added to the medical centre in 1992. Besides medical suites, the new wing also added more than 100 new car park lots to the facility. The Brunei royal family built the Royal Suite in Mount Elizabeth Hospital in 1993 for their private utilisation. It has two suites, a lodger room (for family or doctor in attendance) and a lounge cum conference room with attached pantry and bathrooms.
