Beginnings and Milestones

Jointly owned by a Singaporean and Indonesian businessmen, construction of Mount Elizabeth Hospital and Medical Centre started in 1976. On 8 December 1979, the hospital and medical centre were officially opened.

In the same year on 20 December, the first baby girl was born at Mount Elizabeth and her parents named her "Elizabeth", after the hospital.

In June 1985, National Medical Enterprises Incorporated (NME), the largest healthcare company in the United States of America (USA) at that time, bought Mount Elizabeth Hospital.

It drew upon the management expertise from USA and strived to provide the best tertiary hospital services in Singapore and the region. NME also purchased East Shore Hospital in November 1989.

Mount Elizabeth Hospital is recognised throughout the region for its specialty services and excellent physicians. It offers cardiology, neurosciences, and many other tertiary services. It has the first private cancer centre in the region and was the first private hospital in Singapore to offer cardiac catheterisation, cardiac and neurosurgery and other advanced medical procedures.

To cope with the increasing demand for medical suites as more specialists in the government hospitals leave to join Mount Elizabeth Hospital and Medical Centre, a new wing was added to the medical centre in 1992. Besides medical suites, the new wing also added more than 100 new car park lots to the facility.

The Brunei royal family built the Royal Suite in Mount Elizabeth Hospital in 1993 for their private utilisation. It has two suites, a lodger room (for family or doctor in attendance) and a lounge cum conference room with attached pantry and bathrooms. All rooms come with 24-hour private nurse, security and butler service. This suite is now available to all members of the public who require a higher level of comfort during their hospital stay.

In 1994, Mount Elizabeth Hospital was awarded the Asian Management Award for People Development and Management. Given by the Asian Institute of Management, Far Eastern Economic Review, it aims to promote management excellence in Asia.

In 1995, Parkway Holdings Ltd, which already owned another leading tertiary acute care hospital in Singapore, Gleneagles Hospital, bought Mount Elizabeth Hospital and East Shore Hospital. This makes Parkway Holdings Ltd, the largest private healthcare organisation in Singapore.

In 1998, Mount Elizabeth hospital was awarded the Singapore Quality Class - an award which recognises organisations which have attained a commendable level of performance in the journey towards business excellence.

Having established itself as the premier healthcare facility with a reputation for quality services, Mount Elizabeth Hospital is committed to develop its staff through continuous training and development. For its commitment to human resources development, the hospital was awarded the People Developer Standard in June 2000.

Superbrands

Mount Elizabeth Hospital is proud to be awarded Superbrands status for two years running, both in 2002/2003 and in 2004.

The Superbrands status is awarded by an independent panel of judges. The panel seeks to identify the strongest corporate brands in the country. Only the most deserving of brands attain the credential.

Superbrands promotes the discipline of branding and pays tribute to exceptional brands. Only brands that have shown its worthiness in these five categories - Market Dominance, Longevity, Goodwill, Customer Loyalty and Overall Market Acceptance - can be known as a Superbrand.

In 2002/2003, out of the thousands of brands available in Singapore, only 108 were appointed Superbrands. Out of the 108 brands, only 2 of them were hospitals - Mount Elizabeth Hospital and sister hospital, Gleneagles Hospital.

Achieving the Superbrands status represents the recognition of consistent outstanding quality trusted by our patients and doctors.

Singapore Quality Class

Singapore Quality Class (SQC) is a scheme to recognise organisations that have attained a commendable level of performance in the journey towards business excellence. Mount Elizabeth Hospital is proud to have held that distinction since 1998. This ties in very well with our own goal of being among world class organisations that are able to sustain this high level of performance in productivity and quality.
