Deep venous thrombosis (DVT)

Deep venous thrombosis (clot) is a condition in which a blood clot forms in a vein that is deep inside the body.
1.Mainly affects the veins in the lower leg and thigh.
2.A clot (thrombus) forms in the larger veins of the area.
3.The clot can interfere with blood flow and travel through the bloodstream.
4.The traveling blood clot can get in the brain/lungs/heart/other area and severely damaging the organs.

Risks for DVT

1.Prolonged sitting (such as on long air plane or car trips) or bed-rest.
2.It also may be caused by recent surgery (especially hip, knee, or female reproductive organ surgery), fractures, childbirth within the last 6 months,
3.Use of medications such as estrogen and birth control pills.
4.Overproduction of red blood cells in bone marrow (polycythemia vera)
5.Cancerous (malignant) tumor,
6.Having a condition in which the blood is more likely to clot (hypercoagulability).
7.More common in adults over 60 years

Treatment

The standard treatment is with medication - heparin as anticoagulant, which is given through the vein and Oral medication - warfarin with the heparin.
The ability of the blood to clot is measured by International Normalized Ratio (INR). Doctors usually adjust warfarin to keep the INR between 2 and 3.
