Heart transplant

In heart transplantation surgery, the damaged or diseased heart is replaced with a healthy donor heart.
A healthy heart is obtained from a brain-dead donor who is on life-support. The healthy heart is kept in preserving solution.

Heart transplant is for the patients with:

2.Heart muscle disease
3.Heart valve disease with congestive heart failure
4.Severe heart disease present at birth
5.Life-threatening abnormal heart beats that can not be treated with other therapies

The procedure

The receiving patient:
1. Put into a deep sleep with general anesthesia,
2. Cut is made through the breast bone
3. Blood is circulated through a heart-lung bypass machine to keep the blood oxygen-rich.
4. Diseased heart is removed and the donor heart is stitched in place.
5. The heart-lung machine is disconnected.
6. Blood flows through the transplanted heart
