HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

What is Blood Pressure ?

Blood pressure is the force of blood as it moves through your blood vessels. When measured, blood pressure is reported as two numbers. The top number (Systolic Pressure) represents the force of blood in the arteries when the heart is pumping. The bottom number (Diastolic Pressure) equals the pressure in the blood vessels between beats. A blood pressure reading of 120/80 is considered normal.

What is High Blood Pressure ?

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is the increased force of blood in your arteries. A blood pressure reading of 140/90 or higher is considered too high. Fluctuations in blood pressure are normal. However, a consistent reading at or above this level is dangerous.

High Blood Pressure and Heart Disease

High blood pressure causes damage to your heart and arteries. If left untreated, high blood pressure may result in a stroke, heart failure or heart attack. Because high blood pressure has no symptoms, it is often referred to as the “Silent Killer”. Regular check-up with your physician are very important in detecting high blood pressure.

Medication

Doctor may prescribe medication to help control or lower your blood pressure. It’s extremely important to take the medication regularly as prescribed by your doctor. If you are experiencing negative side effects from the medication, talk with your physician; there are several different types of blood pressure medication available if you can not tolerated the initial medication that is prescribed. Don’t ever stop medication for any reason without first consulting your doctor.

Prevent High Blood Pressure

            • Control your weight Weight loss may lower your blood pressure. By cutting back on calories and fat intake and exercising regularly, you should be able to lose those extra pounds.

            • Reduce sodium intake Salt can raise blood pressure in some people. Read food labels carefully and be creative when cooking by using herbs and spices to make food more flavorful.

            • Increase exercise Aerobic exercise, done on a regular basis, can help control blood pressure. Start slowly and gradually increase your workout. Always remember to warm up and cool down. Consult your physician before beginning any new exercise program.

            • Stop smoking Smoking increases blood pressure and makes the heart work harder. Talk to your doctor for advice or participate in a program designed to help smokers quit.

            • Limit alcohol and caffeine consumption Drinking too much alcohol or caffeinated beverages may raise your blood pressure. Limit your consumption of caffeinated beverages to two or three each day and your alcohol consumption to one or two drinks per day.

            • Reduce stress : Continuous unmanaged stress can cause an increase in blood pressure. Learning relaxation techniques can help you reduce your stress level.
