Kidney Stone

Kidney Stone

A kidney stone is a solid piece of material that forms in the kidney from substances in the urine. It may be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a pearl. The most common types of kidney stones are made from calcium and oxalate. Most kidney stones pass out of the body without any help while others get stuck in the urinary tract, block the urine flow and cause great pain.
Kidney Section Following special diet (change in amount of salt, calcium, oxalate, protein, potassium and fluid in the diet) may help to prevent the forming of more kidney stones. If special diet does not work, medications may be needed to prevent the forming of more kidney stones.

Signs of kidney stones that need help:

  • A burning feeling while urinating
  • Fever and chills
  • Severe pain in back or side
  • Blood in the urine
  • Vomiting
  • Urine that smells bad or looks cloudy

Lithotripsy

In extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (shock wave treatment), high energy shock waves are passed through the body to break stones into pieces as small as grains of sand so that pieces can pass from the body along with the urine.

Two type of shock wave treatment

  • The waves are passed through a soft cushion when the patient lies on top the soft cushion.
  • The patient is placed in a tub of lukewarm water. The x-rays or ultrasound is used to pinpoint the location of the stones. The body is positioned so that the stones are targeted precisely.

Percutaneous Stone Removal

If the stones are quite large (more than 2 cm) or in a location that does not allow effective lithotripsy, percutaneous stone removal may be used.
The surgeon makes a small incision in the back and creates a tunnel directly into the kidney. A tube is inserted and the stone is removed through this tube.

Ureteroscopic Stone Removal

If the stones found in the lower part of the urinary tract, the doctor may pass a ureteroscope up into the bladder and ureter. A basket-like device may be passed through the tube to grasp and withdraw the stone.
