Carotid Endarterectomy

In carotid endarterectomy, the surgeon removes the inner lining of the thickened or damaged carotid artery (which supplies blood to the brain) to eliminate the plaque from the artery to restore blood flow.

What is the main function of carotid artery?

Supplying blood to the brain.
When plaque blocks the blood flow to the brain it can cause an ischemic stroke, which can cause permanent brain damage. This may cause death when a large area of the brain is affected. When plaque blocks only a tiny artery in the brain, it may cause a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack - also known as mini-stroke).

What is Endarterectomy

Endarterectomy is the removal of material on the inside of an artery.

How the plaque built up is measured?

The most common measurement method is Duplex Ultrasound. Duplex Ultrasound uses sound waves to measure blood flow speed. Duplex Ultrasound can locate the narrowing the carotid artery and measure the percentage of the blockage.

Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS)

Intravascular Ultrasound is used to determine intravascular morphology of blood vessels of the coronary and peripheral vasculature. Intravascular Ultrasound provides a cross-sectional image of such vessels and is used as an adjunct to conventional angioplasty, providing an image of the vessel lumen and wall structures. The information from the echoes is used to generate real-time images of the vessels, provide tissue/plague characterization of the constituents of the obstructing plaque, e.g. calcium, fibrous, fibro-fatty and necrotic tissue. Other tests which can measure the plaque built up are:
  • Angiography
  • Computed Tomography (CT) Scan
  • Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA)
