nuclear stress test

Nuclear stress test

A nuclear stress test measures:

Blood flow to  heart muscle at rest and during stress.

It is performed similar to a routine exercise stress test but provides images in addition to electrocardiograms.

How nuclear stress test works

1. During a nuclear stress test, a radioactive substance is injected into the bloodstream.

2. This radioactive  substance mixes with  blood and travels to the heart.

3. A scanner detects the radioactive material in  the heart and  creates images of  the heart muscle.

3. Inadequate blood flow to any part of the  heart will show up as a light spot on the images  ( less radioactive substance got there)

Types of  nuclear stress test

Myocardial perfusion scan

In Myocardial perfusion scan, the patient is requested to  exercise on a treadmill

When the patient  reachs the maximum heart rate,  the patient is given the injection.

Images are made of  the heart shortly after exercise and also a few hours later.

This test shows how well blood flows into the heart muscle and can detect narrowing of the coronary arteries (coronary artery disease).

  Multiple gated acquisition (MUGA) scan

In  Multiple gated acquistion scan the patient receives the injection before exercising.

Images are made of the heart before and after exercise.

A MUGA scan shows the motion of the heart and how well it pumps out blood (ejection fraction).

Ejection Fraction

Ejection Fraction is  the percentage of blood that's pumped out of a filled ventricle with each heartbeat. This measures the capacity at which your heart is pumping.
