Tetralogy of Fallot Repair

The tetralogy of Fallot is a congenital heart defect which involves four heart malformations.

  1. A Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)
  2. Pulmonic Stenosis
  3. Overriding Aorta
  4. Right Ventricular Hypertrophy

It was described  by the French physician Etienne Fallot and it is named after him.

Normal Heart Tetralogy of Fallot

 A Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)

 A hole between the ventricles.

 Pulmonic Stenosis

Many levels of obstruction from the right ventricle to the lungs.

 Overriding Aorta

The aortic valve is not restricted to the left ventricle, thus having biventricular connections.

 Right Ventricular Hypertrophy

Thickening of the muscular walls of the right ventricle, which occurs because the right ventricle is pumping at high pressure.

Treatment

Corrective repair of tetralogy of Fallot involves closure of the ventricular septal defect with a synthetic Dacron patch so that the blood can flow normally from the left ventricle to the aorta.

The narrowing of the pulmonary valve and right ventricular outflow tract is then augmented (enlarged) by a combination of cutting away (resecting) obstructive muscle tissue in the right ventricle and by enlarging the outflow pathway with a patch.
