Lymphoedema

Lymphoedema refers to swelling that can occur anywhere in the body. Lymphoedema commonly affects the limbs.

Primary Lymphoedema

Primary Lymphoedema is due abnormal functioning of the lymphatic system. Primary Lymphoedema may present at birth, develop at puberty or in mid-life.
The lymphatic system is a major component in the immune system. Lymphatic system is a network of the following which produce and transport the lymph fluid from the tissues to the bloodstream.

• lymphoid organs
• lymph nodes
• lymph ducts
• lymphatic tissues
• lymph capillaries
• lymph vessels

Lymph is a clear and white fluid made of the following:

• Fluid from the intestines - chyle, which contains fats and proteins
• Red blood cells
• White blood cells, especially lymphocytes, the cells that attack bacteria in the blood

Lymph nodes are located various parts of the body, such as the neck, armpit, and groin. Lymph nodes produce immune cells that help the body fight infection.

Secondary Lymphoedema

Secondary lymphoedema may occur following:

• a treatment for cancer
• a surgery
• radiation therapy
• recurrent infections or trauma

Lymphoedema may worsen over time if not treated in time.

Symptoms of lymphedema

• clothes, rings are too tight
• fullness feeling in the arms and legs
• loss of flexibility in hands, and ankles
