Cranioplasty

Cranioplasty is a surgical repair of a defect or deformity of a skull. The purpose of cranioplasty is not only cosmetic repair to preserve normal appearances and physical barrier but also neurological improvement (neurosurgery).

As it pertains to abnormal head shape, surgical cranioplasty is designed to improve the symmetry and/or shape the head. It involves the resection, remolding and movement of the bones of the head.

Cranioplasty Implants

This surgical correction of defects in the cranial bones is usually done by implants of metal, plastic material, or bone. The metallic bone substitutes have largely been replaced by modern plastics. Methyl methacrylate was introduced in 1940 and is currently the most common material used. Research in cranioplasty is now directed at improving the ability of the host to regenerate bone.

3-D techniques are often used to work out plate sizes, and research into the subject is ongoing.
