Sleeve Gastrectomy

Sleeve Gastrectomy

Sleeve gastrectomy is a laparoscopic and non-reversible surgical procedure for weight loss. In this surgery the stomach is reduced to about 35% of its original size. This is achieved by surgical removal of a large portion of the stomach (around 65%). The open edges are then attached together (with surgical staples) to form a sleeve or tube with a banana shape. The procedure permanently reduces the size of the stomach to about 35%.
Sleeve gastrectomy is usually performed on extremely obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 60.
A two-stage procedure is performed:

  • Sleeve Gastrectomy - patients usually lose lot of excess weight after this stage
  • Conversion into a gastric bypass or duodenal switch - if the weight loss stops after the first stage

Gastric sleeve may be suitable for the patients with  Low BMI:

    * Patients considering a Lap Band but concerned about a foreign body inside the abdomen

    * Patients with medical problems like anema, crohn's disease, extensive prior surgery or medical conditions which prevent the patient from having weight loss surgeries

    * Patients who are concerned about the potential long term side effects of an intestinal bypass  such as intestinal obstruction, ulcers, anemia, osteoporosis, protein deficiency and vitamin deficiency

    * Patients taking anti-inflammatory medications ( anti-inflammatory medications needed to be avoided after a gastric bypass because anti-inflammatory medications increase th risk of ulcer

    * It might also be a good option if patients have a problem with their lap band requiring revision, have already lost a lot of weight and don't want a full bypass. The weight loss seems to be a little better and more rapid than the lap band (60 - 70% EWL) over two years. There is still no long-term data

Advantages

    * No foreign body inside the patient's body

    * No need for adjustments or fills

    * No disconnecting or reconnecting the intestines

    * Technically simpler operation than the gastric bypass or the duodenal switch

    * Can  safer operations for patients with a body mass index (BMI) more than 60 ( as stage-1 of 2-stage operation).
