Australian Council on Healthcare Standards International or ACHSI

The Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS)

The Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation, dedicated to improving the quality of health care in Australia through continual review of performance, assessment and accreditation. It is the principal independent authority on the measurement and implementation of quality improvement systems for Australian health care organisations.

Standards for evaluation, assessment and accreditation are determined by a committee drawn from peak bodies in health, representatives of government and consumers.

The ACHS, including its subsidiary ACHSI, has been accredited by the ISQua International Accreditation Program (International Society for Quality in Health Care) since 1997.

ACHS's definition of accreditation

For consumers, accreditation is basically an issue of trust. People who use health services want to have confidence that those services are safe and will provide consistent high quality care. People understand that there are risks associated with using the health system, but they want those risks minimised.

The ACHS International is a subsidiary of the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards. The ACHSI Standards are based on the ACHS Standards. Elements are able to be modified and supporting guidelines produced to ensure that the standards are culturally appropriate for many countries and cultures, whilst the standards remain comparable with those used in health care organisations in Australia.

ACHSl delivers accreditation and quality improvement programs to health care organisations throughout the world. The standards and program are based on the internationally recognised ACHS standards and program, which are accredited by the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua).

ACHSI offers a comprehensive clinical indicator program, provides consultancies for the development of local accreditation programs and undertakes tailored reporting and analyses.

ACHS International consultants are also available to assist countries in the development of their own accreditation and quality improvement programs.

Since ACHSI was established in July 2005 it has quickly developed a strong market identity with customers in the Middle East, India and Hong Kong.

The framework for the ACHSI accreditation is the Evaluation and Quality Improvement Program (EQuIP). It is a four-year membership program for establishing and maintaining quality care and services in health care organisations. The program consists of one EQuIP event each year as part of a continuous quality cycle:

  • an Organisation-Wide Survey
  • a Periodic Review
  • two Self-Assessments.
