Affordable medical procedures are luring travellers overseas

By Mark Juddery

In the midst the global financial crisis, one of the few growth areas of travel is tourism designed to save money. Medical tourism has become a multi-billion dollar industry as 2-3 million people leave their countries each year, according to reports on CNN, to take advantage of cheaper medical procedures available overseas .

It is especially popular in the US, where health care is notoriously expensive. A heart bypass there, for example, costs about $US130,000 ($155,000) compared to $US9000 in India or $US11,000 in Thailand .

Medical tourism is not limited to developing countries. A US woman recently paid $US24,000 – a saving of $US36,000 – for hip resurfacing in New Zealand . Even Australia is among the 50 countries advertising medical tourism, trying to lure US and British travellers with relatively low-cost cosmetic surgery and IVF .

Australians are also travelling abroad to save on surgery. A colonoscopy , for example, might cost $1600 (uninsured) in Australia. At Bangkok's Bumrungrad International Hospital, it costs from $440.
