Hip resurfacing implant FAQs

How is bone conserved in a hip resurfacing versus a total hip replacement?

healthbase hip resurfacing surgery implant photo imageBone is conserved in hip resurfacing because a hip resurfacing resurfaces the diseased hip while a total hip replacement replaces it. In resurfacing, the worn cartilage and damaged first layer of bone are removed and a fresh, low-wearing metal surface is installed. On the other hand, total hip replacements require the removal of the upper segment of bone, the hollowing out of the upper half of the leg bone, and a large spike fixed to this upper bone, replacing the top part of the femur.

How does bone conservation benefit younger, more active patients?

Because the hip resurfacing procedure spares bone, a standard total hip stem could be used in a revision of a hip resurfacing. For younger or more active patients who are more likely to cause an implant to come loose, this can be a great advantage.

What are the different components of a hip resurfacing implant?

Each hip joint is made up of several parts:

1. The acetabular component or cup or shell replaces the acetabular bearing surface. The acetabular component is made of metal alloy with a highly polished internal surface.

2. The femoral component replaces the surface of the femoral head. The femoral component is a single component made of metal alloy with a highly polished bearing surface.

Who are some of the hip resurfacing implant manufacturers?

The hip resurfacing implant is manufactured by the following manufacturers:

•  Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics BHR (Birmingham Hip Resurfacing )

•  Johnson & Johnson DEPUY ASR (Articular Surface Replacement)

•  Wright CONSERVE family of hip products

•  Corin/Stryker Cormet hip resurfacing implant

•  Biomet ReCap

•  Zimmer Durom

•  Finsbury ADEPT

•  International Orthopaedics ICON

Who is the right patient for hip resurfacing surgery?

Hip Resurfacing is an alternative to Total Hip Replacement (THR) in younger and more active patients. Typically, physically active patients, under 65 years of age who suffer from hip arthritis, hip dysplasia, avascular necrosis of the hip or inflammatory arthritis are candidates for hip resurfacing. Patients who are over 65 years of age can also benefit from resurfacing surgery if their bone quality is strong enough to support the implant. You must discuss your suitability for hip resurfacing with an orthopedic surgeon.
