The hip resurfacing surgery uses small implants and conserves a large part of the bone as opposed to the hip replacement surgery. However, the Birmingham hip resurfacing implant may still develop problem or it may wear out requiring additional surgery to fix the problem. The usual procedure is to convert the worn out hip resurfacing implant to a total hip replacement .

But, since hip resurfacing is a bone preserving procedure, it does not remove as much bone as is removed in hip replacement procedure making revision surgery, if required, not as difficult.
