HIP RESURFACING PREPARATION

How should I prepare for the surgery?
Prior to the surgery, your medical profile consisting of X-rays of the affected hip(s), full medical and surgical history will be reviewed by the orthopedic surgeon. You may have a consultation with your orthopedic surgeon to discuss your specific condition. On arriving at the hospital, new X-rays may be taken and your condition evaluated. Your surgeon may advise you to meet a physiotheraphist (Physical Therapist, PT) even before the surgery to discuss your lifestyle after the surgery. He may also give you suggestions on the precautions you should take post operation and give tips on how you should go about doing the normal daily activities - sleep, get out of bed, sit, get up, and walk - following surgery.

Should I prepare my house for rehabilitation in advance?
It is best that you make your house ready before surgery for the rehabilitation period. Here is a list of things that you should do:
•  To make it easier for you to lower and raise yourself from the seat and thus reduce the risk of dislocation of your new hip, raise the height of chairs and sofas by adding cushions.
•  To avoid excessive bending, move regular use items to shelves or tables above waist level.
•  You may be asked only to sit in armchairs as you will need the arms to help you sit down and get up. So have armchairs available.
•  For added support while sitting down on and getting up from the toilet seat, arrange to have an elevated toilet seat and/or support bars fitted in your bathroom.
•  To avoid accidental tripping and falling, remove throw rugs, electrical cords, telephone wires, etc. from the floor.

What should I bring with me to the hospital?
You should bring all your medical records and reports, X-Rays, prescriptions, etc. with you to the hospital. Other things to bring with you are comfortable clothing and low-heeled walking shoes. You should check with your surgeon for additional things that you might be required to bring.
