SHOULDER REPLACEMENT - PHYSICAL THERAPY AND REHABILITATION

For a shoulder replacement to be successful it is important that you follow the rehabilitation program as advised by your surgeon and physical therapist. Physiotherapy starts soon after the operation. You wear an arm sling during the day for the first several weeks following surgery. You wear the sling at night for 4 to 6 weeks. Most patients are able to perform simple activities such as eating, dressing and grooming within 2 weeks after surgery. Driving a car is not allowed for at least 6 weeks after surgery. You should religiously follow the home exercise regimen prescribed by your physical therapist.

Following the surgery:
•  Avoid overuse of the shoulder in the early stages of recovery as it may result in severe limitations in motion.
•  You must avoid forceful contraction of muscles by not using the arm to push yourself up in bed or from a chair.
•  For the first few weeks do not lift anything heavier than a glass of water.
•  Do not play contact sports or do repetitive heavy lifting after your shoulder replacement.
•  Do not place your arm in any extreme position, like such as straightening out to the side or behind your body for the first few weeks after surgery.
