Johnson & Johnson DePuy Hip Replacement Implants

In a total hip replacement surgery, the diseased or damaged hip is replaced with an implant or prosthesis consisting of components that duplicate the function of the diseased hip bone and socket joint. There are essentially 3 parts of a hip replacement implant or prosthesis:

Stem: It is made of a metal and is inserted into the femur (thigh bone) to anchor the implant in place.

Ball: The ball is attached to the top of the stem.

Socket: It is anchored into the pelvis and the ball, which is attached to the top of the stem, fits into a liner within the socket.

The component of the implant that forms the socket is called the acetabular cup, and the component that forms the ball and the stem is called the femoral stem. DePuy offers the following options for each of these components.

Acetabular Cup Options

•  ASR™ XL Acetabular Cup System
•  Pinnacle™ Acetabular Cup System

Femoral Stem Options

•  Corail® Femoral Stem
•  Summit® Femoral Stems
•  S-ROM® Modular Hip Stem
