Ed P, cyclist from California: Birmingham hip resurfacing by Dr. Vijay Bose

Four months ago I had my left hip resurfaced by Dr. Vijay Bose at Apollo Hospital in Chennai, India. I arranged the procedure through Healthbase , a company in Boston, Massachusetts. There are at least two services in the United States using Dr. Bose’s services. Healthbase is one of these I called and was pleased with the answers they gave me.

I further researched Dr. Bose. He has studied in Birmingham, England with Dr. Derek McMinn and Dr. Ronan Treacy, the inventors of the implant [Birmingham] used for hip resurfacing,  He has been a consultant and lecturer at many hospitals in Asia, and, most importantly, had performed over 1200 hip resurfacings at the time I began my research.

I felt the care I received in the Platinum Ward at Apollo hospital was exemplary. I have a list of all of the staff in that unit to look at from time to time to remind me of the excellent help I received from each of them.

Special mention should be made of Moe, the gentleman at Healthbase who works directly with patients. Moe helped with all of the logistical aspects of the trip - getting hip X-rays from my local hospital, obtaining an Indian visa, making flight arrangements, and so on. Moe was always available. The information and advice he gave always proved accurate. The most important aspect of Moe’s behavior was his positive outlook. He was always enthusiastic about the success of surgeries arranged by Healthbase. Hip resurfacing is only one of the procedures for which the organization makes arrangements . The main reason I used the services of Healthbase was Moe’s performance. I really can’t imagine a more reassuring individual with whom to work.

Prior to my surgery I was in extreme pain. If I lifted objects, sat in a low chair, or walked or rode a bicycle for any distance, my hip complained. I was able to walk comfortably a week after the surgery, with some pain from atrophied muscles, but none from the hip. Within 6 weeks, I was able to a do a 33 mile bicycle ride on flat roads. During a ride last weekend, I rode my bicycle over two 8000 foot passes in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California.

I live on ½ acre of hilly property, with lots of oak, pine and cedar trees. Each spring and fall I have many leaves and needles to clean up, using a two-wheeled cart to bring them up to a fire pile. In 22 years here I’ve never fully cleaned up the property. This spring, I was able to work several full days, one of them for 10 hours, to rake up and then bring the cart up the hill. The property is now clean (until next fall), with no pain from the hip at all.

As I told Dr. Bose at Apollo Hospital, he has given me back the ability to enjoy activities which I thought were lost forever. I thank him and Moe, Healthbase and all of the staff at Apollo Hospital for my new life.
