Kayra M - Hip resurfacing surgery in Belguim by Dr. DeSmet

In the May 2009 newsletter, an article about Medical Tourism to India for Hip Resurfacing had caught my eye, because in 2000, I was told by a Chiropractor that if I did not change my walking I would need a hip replacement in 5 years. Since I was only 44 at the time, this was very distressing. I knew THR's were only "good" for 5 years or so; 15 at the most. Custom Orthotics slowed the progress of the arthritis enough that I was able to put Surgery off for 11.5 years. In June 2010, I had not had relief for 6 weeks or so with the pain. A very young man at our church was having THR's in both hips due to Steriodal Lupus treatments. He recommmended his Doctor in Sioux Falls. Sure enough, they advertised Hip Resurfacing ! We immediately made an appointment for X-rays. We were given the diagnosis of "Moderate to Severe Arthritis of the Right Hip". He recommended a THR after Steroidal injections stopped giving pain relief. We decided 11.5  years of pain was enough. We came home and contacted Moe at Healthbase, as per the SMI Newsletter article.

Moe was very helpful "....." he mentioned that the Annual Conference in Belgium was all about bone size and hip resurfacing. When we looked it up on the Internet, we saw a Dr. DeSmet talking all about it and contacted him directly. We were not able to get all the info we needed and then remembered seeing Belgium on the Healthbase site. Well, back to our friend Moe we went and within 2 days, Dr. DeSmet had read and responded to the Xrays! He said not to wait any longer if I wanted Resurfacing vs. THR. Moe worked the "package Deal" so we wouldn't have any surprise bills. Within 3 weeks, we were in Belgium! We were thrilled with the atmosphere there and all the staff was great.

After our return, we got an additional billing from the Hospital there in Belgium all in Dutch. Once again, it was Moe to the rescue. He contacted Belgium and there was no additional bills, after all.

We have been very blessed to be a Healthbase customer and consider you all there as friends. Thank you again for all the help. At 4 months Post op today, I am doing well. I walk better now than I have in 11 years!.
