Anchor: A Santa Fe woman says she had no choice. She needed surgery and her health insurance didn't cover it. So she went to India. 53-year old Pati Springmeyer, who suffered from debilitating arthritis in her hip is one of many Americans who say they have been left with no choice but to go to another country for the care they need. The reason is rising health care costs and the restrictions some times put on insurance benefits.
Reporter: This is where 53-year old Pati Springmeyer got hip resurfacing surgery December 10 - Chennai, India.
Pati: It's almost miraculous.
Reporter: Springmeyer says she searched the web and through Healthbase found Dr. Vijay Bose then scheduled an appointment. Springmeyer got on a plane in early December, flew 8,000 miles and saved thousands of dollars.
Pati: I got the best medical care possible for a fraction of the costs of what it would be here in my own country. So how can you beat that?
Reporter: The surgery cost run more that $40,000 in the US. In India it's only $8,000 and that includes your air fare, hotel and food.
Pati: I stayed in a 5-star hotel. I recuperated in the most beautiful surroundings possible.
Reporter: And Springmeyer is just one of thousands of Americans participating in what's called medical tourism. And she and others say they are not sacrificing quality healthcare for the cheaper prices.
Pati: The doctor in Chennai, India, Dr. Bose, has done over a thousand of them.
Reporter: And healthcare is something that has been talked about a lot in the presidential race and by Governor Bill Richardson. Right now legislators are looking at several plans to provide health care to every New Mexican, no matter what. And it might be too late for Springmeyer but she is happy with the decision she made. She says the day after surgery...
Pati: I got up and I walked from one end of the room to the other which is the best medical care of this procedure that you can get anywhere probably in the world.
Anchor: Springmeyer says hip replacement surgery was an option as well but unlike hip resurfacing it would have taken her months to get her back on her feet.
