NORMA - ACL RECONSTRUCTION

Tennis player Norma is one of the many uninsured and underinsured American patients who seek affordable health care abroad. She recently had ACL Reconstruction (Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction) in India, arranged by Healthbase. She talks about the wonderful experience she had with Healthbase and the quality of care she received at Apollo Hospitals with Dr. Yash Gulati.

Video Transcript

Dr. Yash Gulati: Is your knee feeling better?

Norma K: Yes, it is

Dr. Gulati: Can I have a look at it, please?

Norma: You can.

Dr. Gulati: So, this is the one that had been giving you trouble?

Norma: Yes.

Dr. Gulati: We did this [operation ] about 5 days ago, didn't we?

Norma: 5-6 days ago, yes.

Dr. Gulati: That's right. Can you lift it up? Don't use the other leg. Just try and lift this leg. Now, put it down.

Norma: That's as far as it goes.

Dr. Gulati: It's been only a few days so that's pretty good.

Norma: Would you like for me to describe the problem?

Dr. Gulati: Ya, tell me what happened to you? Why did you decide to come here and what happened next?

Norma: First of all, I play tennis. I am a tennis player in the United States. I took a step in tennis and tore the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament). And because I like to play tennis and it's very important to my personal health, I needed to get it repaired. I did not have insurance in the United States because it's a very complicated system there that isn't working very well. In order for me to get this surgery in the US I would have to take on a huge debt.

Dr. Gulati: How much would it cost you there?

Norma: Between $35,000 and $40,000.

Dr. Gulati: Is that right?!

Norma: I investigated it. Yes, that is right.

Dr. Gulati: How much has it cost you here?

Norma: The cost through Healthbase was $3,200.

Dr. Gulati: That's all?

Norma: Well, I had to buy a plane ticket.

Dr. Gulati: So within about $5,000-$6,000.

Norma: $6,000 or $7,000, I think.

Dr. Gulati: [Jokes] So now you owe me $33,000.

Norma: [Jokes] I think that's fair. I'll split it with you.

Dr. Gulati: [Jokes] Thank you. That's okay.

Norma: As soon as I got here, I was very well attended to the hospital and I got to see you right away. You had already seen some of my studies and got some additional studies that were appropriate for this. You helped me discuss how to fix this is in my case and you got me into surgery right away.

Dr. Gulati: So it's been alright.

Norma: It's been alright.

Dr. Gulati: You know you have this hip problem that's lingering on and we need to attend to that as well.

Norma: Yes, I know that. That was a great concern of mine. We discussed that in length.

Dr. Gulati: That's right.

Norma: The experience in surgery was also a wonderful experience. The physical therapy here at the hospital has also been perfect.

Dr. Gulati: So far so good.

Norma: Yes.

Dr. Gulati: It's very early days. Takes about 4 to 6 weeks, at least.

Norma: I think so and I expected that.

Dr. Gulati: And you know that. You had it done on the other side.

Norma: That's right. It will take a matter of a lot of work on my part before I am all done.

Dr. Gulati: So there you are.

Norma: Thank you very much, doctor.
