How is the surgery performed?
Cost of panniculectomy

Details of the procedure

Before the surgery starts, the patient is given general anesthesia . The surgeon (mostly plastic surgeon) starts by making an incision from the lower area of the sternum to the pubic bone and another horizontal incision at the pubic area. The excess fat and skin are then delicately removed. He then pulls together the remaining skin and closes the incision. The surgeon may insert drains that will require personal home care. Tape is then applied to the incision areas. Any other abdominal surgery like repairs to the abdominal wall or hernia within the belly button can usually be made at the same time. The time required for the panniculectomy surgery may be several hours.

A panniculectomy surgery is an inpatient surgery mostly performed in a hospital setting and the patient may typically be required to stay in the hospital ranging from one to seven days after the procedure.

The patient may be fitted with a medical garment after the surgery which he may need to wear at all times. The patient may only be given sponge bathe for the first few days. If drains were inserted, the drains will need to be emptied as instructed by the surgeon. Dressings will also need to be changed. Pain, swelling, and bruising can occur, which can be managed with medications and proper care.

Patients cannot resume normal activities immediately after the surgery. Restrictions include no exercise or lifting of ten pounds or more. There cannot be any pressure placed on the abdominal area.
