Hymenoplasty or hymen reconstruction surgery

Hymenorrhaphy, hymenoplasty or hymen reconstruction surgery is the surgical restoration of the hymen - the thin, ring-like skin membrane partially covering the opening of the vagina.

Hymen is made of elastic and fibrous tissue. Bleeding occurs when the hymen tears, which is typically the result of a woman’s first experience with intercourse. On rare occasions, a female can unknowingly tear her hymen by inserting a tampon, or during sports like bicycling, horseback riding, or even gymnastics.

The hymenoplasty surgery is usually sought for ethnic, cultural or religious reasons. Patients with the desire for higher sexual satisfaction may also be candidates for this procedure, because the vaginal walls are tightened.

Procedure details

Hymenoplasty is done on a outpatient basis and lasts about one to two hours.

The surgery requires a local anesthetic. Your doctor will use dissolvable stitches to reconnect the skin membrane that once partially covered the opening to the vagina.

Recovery time is about six weeks with risks of infection and fever very minimal.
