Kyphoplasty

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive spinal procedure for the treatment of  pain vertebral compression fractures(VCF) which are fractures in vertebra, the small bones that make up the spinal column. In vertebra fracture, one or more vertebra in the spine collapse due to compression or distortion which cauese pain. Such fractures may be a symptom and result of osteoporosis. Another cause of weakened vertebrae is cancer. The goal of kyphoplasty is to relieve the pain of osteoporotic compression fractures.

Kyphoplasty is a percutaneous procedure which means the entire procedure is carried out using a hollow needle inserted into the patient`s body without making any incisions on the skin. Inthe kyphoplasty procedure, a balloon tamp is first inserted throught the needle and into  the fractured bone where it is inflated to restore the height and shape of the vertebra and to correct angular deformity. Once the balloon is removed, a bone cement mixture is injected into tne cavity created by the balloon, thus stabilizing the fracture.

Kyphoplasty can increase patient`s functional abilities, allow them to return to the previous level of activity without any form of physical therapy or rehabilitation and prevent further vertebral colllapse.

Suitable candidates for kyphoplasty are those with painful symptoms or spinal deformities due to vertebral compression fractures resulting from osteoporosis.
