Cardiac Stem Cell

Brief description

Cardiac stem cell therapy is a revolutionary treatment of very severe heart failure whereby specially prepared stem cells are injected into the patient’s heart. It is only used as a last resort for the treatment of a failing heart, where other medical or surgical treatments failed. Stem cell treatment could be given either by directly injecting it into heart muscle (trans-thoracic) or through a catheter inserted through femoral artery (trans-catheter). Stem cells are particularly useful for diffuse ischemic heart disease due to blocked coronary arteries , or in some cases of cardiomyopathy. The patient’s own blood is taken to prepare stem cells in the laboratory and therefore no donor matching is required. Results show that stem cells enhance the heart’s function and greatly improve the patient’s quality of life.
