Purana Quila

The Purana Quila (Old Fort) in Delhi is a good example of medieval military architecture. Built by Humayun in 1534, with later-day modifications by Sher Shah Suri, the Purana Quila is a monument of bold design, which is strong, straightforward, and every inch a fortress.

Purana Qila is also different from the later forts of the Mughals, as it does not have a complex of palaces, administrative, and recreational buildings as is generally found in the forts built later on.

Purana Quila is roughly rectangular in shape having a circuit of nearly two kilometers. It has three main gates - the Humayun darwaza, Talaqi darwaza and Bara darwaza. The huge double-storeyed gates are built with red sandstone.

Another attraction inside the fort is Sher Mandal, a double-storeyed octagonal tower of red sandstone built by Sher Shah and used as a library by Humayun after he recaptured the fort from Sher Shah Suri's son.

Today, Purana Qila is the venue for the spectacular sound and light show held every evening
