Healthbase Patient: Marc D

Spine Surgery

After two decades of Conservative and aggressive treatment for a damaged spine, which included but was definitely not limited to a discectomy of L5-S1, and I was no closer to a comfortable life.  I was scheduled for an experimental disc replacement operation in Denver. A series of x-rays exposed I had actually broken my back.  This was never found by the previous doctors responsible for my health including the surgeon who performed my discectomy.  The last step before disc replacement was a disco-gram which was to cost $12,000.  Being a self pay patient the hospital refused to perform the test (my back was rider-ed off of my insurance) and all communication ended.  The hospital simply returned my reports without a single word.

Although I was frustrated I continued forward and turned to the internet.  I had not heard of medical tourism before finding Healthbase on the web.  I spent a couple of days reading testimonials and talking about the option with my wife.  We decided to get a quote and filled out the on-line registration.  I pressed the `submit` button and within 30 seconds my cell phone rang.  "Hello, this is Moe from Heathbase".

Marc Spine Surgery Before and After I cannot explain the surprise I felt after months, years and decades of frustration experienced from the US heath care system.

Moe helped me send my digital reports over the Internet and all my reports were on there way.  They were received in maybe 45 minutes and on to surgeons in India for review.  Because the doctors in Denver were going to replace a disc this was the procedure I requested.  Within a day or so the best surgeon was chosen, I received a quote for $8700, and was scheduled for a conference call with the Doctor.  Moe called and had Dr. Bipin S. Walia, head neurological surgeon at Max Super Specialty Hospital in Delhi, on the phone.  After a greeting we began to discuss my needs.  Dr. Walia asked some questions to establish my current health and expectations.  He then turned to what he recommended.  He began by saying he could perform the disc replacement I had requested and that he performs them routinely but...

because of the instability of the area due to the fracture he did not recommend this treatment.  I was surprised again,  he had discovered what others had not and only received my x-rays not a report about the fracture.  For best results, he continued, I would suggest a spinal fusion.  I was a little disappointed because this treatment sounded so low tech but we continued.  I asked him "if money was not an issue what else might you recommend?"  He responded there was an 85% success record with this procedure alone but if a BMP (a chemical bone fusion not available yet in the US) was added the success would rise to 95%.  This would run another $2500 bringing my total to $11,200.  Still less than the disco-gram test the doctors in Denver wanted. I decided to move forward.

I scheduled the operation with Moe and asked him what I was to do next.  He replied "Everything else is up to me,  I`ll take care of the rest."  He sent links for passport, visa and airline info.  I applied for my passport,  visa and booked my flight ($1050) and was done.  He arranged for everything with the hospital, Dr. Walia, and a guest house I would be staying at after the surgery.  I wired the money in two payments for a total payment less than $12,000 including the $11,200 for the surgery and $673 for the guest house.  Unbelievable!  I even received a refund for over payment when I returned.

Marc Spine Surgery at Taj Mahal

Now all that was left was to fly to the other side of the Earth.  I arrived in Delhi and was greeted by a hospital representative who took me directly to the hospital and my room.  The hospital performed all of their own tests including blood work, chest x-ray, spine x-ray, EKG, MRI, and Cat-scan.  I met with Dr. Walia and we discussed the procedure again.  My surgery went completely as scheduled.  I spent a total of 7 days in the hospital (2 days before surgery and 4 days after) and was picked up by a driver from `the Stay Inn` my guest house for the recovery period.  There I spent 10 days healing, mingling with other patients, and enjoying the culture and sites.  I even traveled to see the Taj Mahal.  At the end of my stay I was taken to the airport and flew home.  The entire experience was once in a lifetime stuff and I will never forget it.

I am at 8 weeks post surgery now and have been sleeping in a bed (I had slept sittin up in a chair for nearly 2 years before the surgery) and taking no pain meds (was dependant on a cocktail of narcotics thanks to our US doctors).  I can honestly say I am nearly 100% and will be the rest of the way very soon.  My only regret is not knowing about this option 10 years ago.

Moe at Healthbase made this miracle of healing possible.  He was there for every question, concern and kindness.  I am preparing to go abroad again for a procedure my wife needs and am supremely confident that Healthbase will see this to a successful conclusion as well. Good luck to you, you are at the right place.  Make your healing experience one of adventure, economy, and success.  With Healthbase all this is posslble.
