Spinal disc replacement surgery

Spinal disc replacement surgery (also known as artificial disc replacement (ADR), total disc replacement (TDR), or intervertebral disc arthroplasty), is a type of arthroplasty surgical procedure in which degenerated intervertebral discs in the spinal column are replaced with artificial (metal and plastic) ones in the lower or upper spine (lumbar disc replacement and cervical disc replacement respectively). The spinal disc replacement procedure is used to treat chronic, severe low back pain and cervical pain resulting from degenerative disc disease.

The goal of the artificial disc replacement procedure is to eliminate or reduce pain, while still allowing motion throughout the spine. Another proposed advantage is the prevention of premature breakdown in adjacent levels of the spine, a potential risk in fusion surgeries.

Ideal candidates for disk replacement surgery:

  • Are healthy weight individuals younger than 60 years
  • Have only one degenerated disk
  • Do not have any other bone diseases or deformities
  • Have not had any previous back surgeries
  • Have failed to respond to other forms of treatment and medications

Before artificial disc replacement, the standard of care for chronic back pain was spinal fusion surgery - a procedure that involves fusing two or more vertebrae together to remove motion in those segments of the spine, allowing for pain reduction due to the resulting decreased movement. Data shows that artificial disc replacement patients, when compared to spinal fusion patients, have shorter surgeries, less blood loss, shorter hospital stays and are quicker to return to work following surgery.

Affordable spinal disc replacement in South Korea

While three artificial discs have received complete FDA approval, some insurance companies in the United States continue to deny coverage for artificial disk replacement surgery, still classifying it as experimental. Spinal disk surgery is still relatively new in the United States, but has been used in countries such as South Korea for many years. So, many Americans who are uninsured or underinsured, and Canadians who find the long wait lists excruciatingly painful, travel to South Korea and abroad for spinal surgery.

South Korea is becoming a hot medical tourism destination among Westerners looking for fast access to affordable high quality medical care such as spinal surgery. The modern infrastructure in the country along with personalized and affordable care add to its appeal as a top medical tourism destination.

Cost savings for medical procedures compared to US or Europe are tremendous. Depending upon the surgery sought, savings can range from upwards of 50% for comparable treatments in the US, UK or other Western countries.

The quality of care offered by Healthbase`s health care provider partners in South Korea is comparable or superior to what is available in the US while price-wise it is much cheaper.
